Back on our own after a series of guests, we chat some recent games, a good bit about upcoming GenCon SoCal, and discuss Backstory – a technique for fleshing out PCs for convention, oneshots, and regular play. Chris gets surprised with a question about experience, and we round out with a review and discussion of Wushu: the Ancient Art of Action Role-playing.

I really enjoyed your discussion about ‘Backstory’. I definately plan on trying it out.
Dread (by Epidiah Ravachol), uses a similar character creation mechanic to help players immediately identify with their characters. It this case they fill out a questionaire about their characters that help them uncover their motives and secrets. It works particularly well for Con games or one-shots where you want to engage your players quickly (much like your Backstory mechanic).
